MADISON, Wis. — A second brace in three games from Trevor Amann and a fourth clean sheet of the season for Lalo Delgado helped Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC to their first ever win over Forward Madison FC by a 2-0 scoreline.
“At the moment, Trevor’s flying. He’s on a roll,” Hailstorm FC head coach Éamon Zayed said. “Long may it continue.”
Northern Colorado (3-1-2, 11 pts) got on the board in the 11th minute when Amann cut in on his right foot on the counter and fired past Madison (2-1-4, 10 pts) keeper Bernd Schipmann.
“I’m feeling more confident,” Amann said. “I play with some amazing teammates and we all know each other a lot better this year. I’m just a striker in form at the moment.”
Hailstorm almost doubled their lead quickly, but Schipmann denied midfielder Jackson Dietrich’s effort at the near post in the 14th minute.
Forward Madison thought they were level in the 39th minute when Christian Chaney put a rebound from a long shot past Delgado, but he was whistled for offside. Another Delgado save in stoppage time meant Hailstorm took their 1-0 lead into the break.
Hailstorm FC had a chance to double their lead in the 51st minute when Trevor Amann was dragged down in the area by Madison defender Timmy Mehl, who was sent off for denying the clear goal scoring opportunity, but Billy King’s penalty was saved by Schipmann.
“The gameplan today was to limit transition,” Hailstorm defender Brecc Evans said. “We’re very pleased with the result.”
The man advantage for Hailstorm finally paid off in the 75th minute when substitute Marky Hernández found Amann who hit it across his body and into the back of the Madison net, giving his team a 2-0 lead. It was Amann’s fifth goal in three games, moving him to second in the league and equaling his total from 2022. Up two goals and a man, Hailstorm comfortably saw out their second straight win.
“Trevor Amann’s on fire,” Evans said.
Hailstorm FC will be back on the pitch when they make their Future Legends Field debut against Central Valley Fuego FC at 7 p.m. Mountain time on Saturday, May 27.
“Now we’re at home, it’s really time to put it all together and make our new stadium a fortress,” Zayed said.
