WINDSOR, Colo. — Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC snapped streaks of 10 matches unbeaten and 13 matches scoring a goal in a 1-0 loss to Charlotte Independence Saturday night at 4Rivers Equipment Stadium.
“Id rather this result come now than later in the season, but it’s been coming, to be honest,” Hailstorm head coach Éamon Zayed said.
The only goal of the match was an own goal when a Charlotte cross deflected off of Hailstorm defender Haruki Yamazaki and past keeper Lalo Delgado in the 68th minute.
“The goal was a fluke,” Zayed said. “It probably should have been 0-0, but sometimes they get a bit of luck.”
Hailstorm were not without their chances in the match, out-shooting Charlotte 17-6, with six of Northern Colorado’s shots finding the target compared with just one Independence shot on goal.
“We definitely had chances to score and we didn’t take them,” Hailstorm forward Jake Keegan said.
Both the Hailstorm players and coaches emphasized bouncing back from the defeat as quickly as possible, starting with next Saturday’s trip to One Knoxville SC.
“Obviously we want to win, but hopefully this is just one bad game and now we get back to work,” Hailstorm defender David Garcia said.
